The Ed Bradley Edition Newspaper underscores the significance of his legacy and contribution as a television correspondent and journalist of the highest integrity. This publication focused on why balanced journalism is important. Students were challenged to consider how the media can impact the ways they relate to one another as they conducted interviews with participants at the Ed Bradley Mural Dedication. Each subject shared their personal path and how they use their skills and talents to shine a light on other people’s stories.
The Creative Brief: Design a classical newspaper to feature interviews conducted by Philadelphia grade school students interested in journalism during the Ed Bradley Mural Dedication. While informing the students of who Edward Rudolph “Ed” Bradley, Jr. was–an American journalist who worked for 26 years on CBS’s 60 Minutes–we helped them think of inspiring questions, designated teams, and observed their interviews.
We compared the students expectations to a traditional paper to create our own classical template which clearly displayed text and images provided directly from the students after the Mural Dedication. The result was a paper that connected generations of dreamers and writers.
Highly-esteemed journalist Ed Bradley, was one of very few black people in primetime media during his tenure at CBS. The Philadelphia native raised in the same West Philadelphia neighborhood where the mural was painted and the newspaper exercise took place. On May 19th, children filled the neighborhood and their minds with hope during our newspaper activity.
